Edit: As has been pointed out to me in the comments by gwyntar, my indignant outrage is somewhat misplaced. It's bizarre that the Telegraph has latched onto this as a new thing, but it's been in place (and apparently largely ignored) for at least a decade. There's more information at Left Foot Forward.

I'll leave this here for posterity in the name of owning my fuck-ups. The lesson here: even when it seems the Telegraph is damning its own, double-check the facts. At least I hadn't posted the letter…

You may or may not be aware that earlier this year, the guidelines for the government's flagship "free schools"—which their funding depends on—changed. These schools now must teach that bringing up children well requires marriage (and not, for example, civil partnerships).

And because the government has a "sense of humour", this rule is Section 28 of the Free School Model Funding Agreement.

[Current Music |Gomez - How We Operate]

Help me, lazywebs! I'm building a new computer, but having never built from scratch before, I'm not sure about components. Please, those with such techie experience, to be reading and commenting?

(People who've helped in the past: please re-read. I'm an idiot and forgot to write down the build I had before eBuyer deleted the list, and I honestly can't remember the vast majority of the components I was looking at.)

Yes, yes, I suck at updating. Also at reading posts in general (although I blame my computer in part for that). I have vague plans to start updating again at some point. Some time. Maybe.

In the meantime, you may wish to keep half an eye on my my website. Except that link isn't working at the moment, for some reason that I don't really understand. Try here instead. There is zero content there at the moment, but it may or may not be updated slightly more often than here. Possibly.

What I love about Oxford [Feb. 16th, 2007|01:32 am]

One of the things I really love about Oxford, believe it or not, is the late-night tute-sheet crisis. I know the actual process isn't much fun, but I love walking through the college when there's nobody about when I've finished. Nuffield lawn is slightly spooky in the middle of the night—there're no lights, and it looks as if it goes on past the trees forever. And then there was the first day of snow in Oxford, when I was working in the library until 3am, and when I came down, the snow was about as thick as it's been, and I was the first person to walk in it.

Don't get me wrong—I hate losing sleep to get this or that piece of work in on time. But sometimes, it does have its advantages.
